Dr. Mahyar Amouzegar

Dr. Mahyar Amouzegar recently assumed the role of the president at New Mexico Tech (NMT), bringing to the position a blend of academic insight and practical experience. Before his current tenure, he served as Provost and Senior Vice-President for Academic Affairs at the University of New Orleans (UNO), where he was also recognized as the Freeport McMoRan Distinguished Professor of Logistics and the Hancock-Whitney Distinguished Professor of Finance. His previous positions include Dean of Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona and Senior Policy Analyst at RAND.
In his career, Mahyar has successfully merged academic pursuits with strategic initiatives, securing industry and community support, fostering successful research and operations teams, and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workforce. His work in developing national security policies has involved projects that span strategic assessments, global logistics, and mission assurance across various domains.
Amouzegar is the founding editor of the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Decision Sciences, a contributing editor of the International Abstract in Operations Research, and serves on several editorial boards. His academic affiliations include fellowships with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) in the UK and the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICA) in Canada, Senior Membership in IEEE, and memberships in honor societies such as Tau Alpha Pi, Alpha Iota Delta, and Phi Kappa Phi. He has also served as the past president of the Western Decision Sciences Institute and is active on various industry advisory boards.
Holding a Ph.D. in Operations Research from UCLA (1995), a D. Engineering in Operations Research (1991), an MS in Electrical Engineering (1989) from the same institution, and a BS in Applied Mathematics from San Francisco State (1987), Mahyar has published extensively in logistics and operations research. In addition to his academic and professional contributions, he is also a published novelist.
